Skill Assessment for Australian Visas

Prove Your Skills: The Critical First Step to Your Skilled Visa

You can have a Ph.D. and 20 years of experience, but to the Australian government, your skills are not “official” until you have a positive Skill Assessment.

This is the most important mandatory step in your skilled migration journey. A Skill Assessment is a formal process where an Australian-appointed assessing authority evaluates your qualifications and work experience to certify that they are comparable to Australian standards. Without a positive assessment for your nominated occupation, you are not eligible to even submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a skilled visa.

At GlobalNest Study Solution, we are experts in this complex and high-stakes process. We don’t just lodge your documents; we build a detailed case file to ensure your hard-earned skills are recognized, paving the way for your skilled visa application.

Understanding the Process & Why It’s So Complex

There is no single “Skill Assessment” application. Australia has over 35 different assessing authorities, and each one has its own unique, non-negotiable, and complex set of rules.

  • IT Professionals (ACS): The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has a specific “deeming” process, where they may “deem” a portion of your work experience as “unskilled” and therefore not count it for points.
  • Engineers (Engineers Australia): Requires a detailed Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) to be written, proving your engineering projects meet Australian standards.
  • General Professionals (VETASSESS): Assesses a wide range of occupations (like Marketing or Management) and requires a perfect match between your job duties and their official descriptions.
  • Trades (TRA): Trades Recognition Australia often requires a practical assessment or a technical interview to prove your hands-on skills.

A mistake with the wrong authority, a poorly written job description, or a missing document will result in a negative outcome, costing you thousands of dollars and months or even years of delay.

Our Skill Assessment Management Service

We remove the guesswork and maximize your chances of success.

  1. Occupation Selection (ANZSCO): We analyze your entire academic and professional history to select the most suitable nominated occupation from the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).
  2. Authority & Pathway Identification: We identify the correct assessing authority and the specific pathway (e.g., CDR, Skills Assessment, etc.) that best fits your profile.
  3. Forensic Document Collection: We provide you with a meticulous checklist for every document required, including qualification transcripts, employer reference letters, payment evidence, and job descriptions.
  4. Strategic Case Building: We review, edit, and help you write your reference letters and job descriptions to ensure they contain the specific keywords, roles, and responsibilities that the assessing authority is looking for.
  5. Application Lodgement & Management: We lodge your application on your behalf, handle all communication with the assessing authority, and respond to any requests for further information.

Frequently asked Questions

We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions our clients ask. If you don’t find your answer here, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly.

  • How long is a Skill Assessment valid for?

A positive Skill Assessment is typically valid for migration purposes for three (3) years from the date it is issued. This is why timing is critical. We build a long-term strategy with you to ensure your assessment is valid when you are ready to be invited for your skilled visa. If it expires, you must apply for a new one (or a renewal) and pay the fees again.

  • What happens if I get a negative Skill Assessment?

A negative outcome is a serious setback, but it may not be the end. Your options depend on the reason for the refusal: Appeal/Review: If the assessor made an error, we can lodge a formal appeal or review. Re-apply: If you were missing a document or your work experience was insufficient, you may need to wait until you have more experience and then lodge a new application. Change Occupation: We may be able to re-assess your profile and find a different, more suitable occupation code to apply under. We will provide you with an honest and strategic analysis of your best path forward.

  • Do my qualifications and work experience have to be from Australia?

No. The entire purpose of a Skill Assessment is to prove that your overseas qualifications and work experience are as good as the Australian standard. This is how Australia attracts skilled professionals from all over the world. Our job is to collect and present your international experience in a way that the Australian assessing authority will recognize and approve.
